Birthplace of the Taskiwin

The Taskiwin is a martial dance originally from the High Atlas in Morocco and registered since 2017 on UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding. From a historical point of view, the decline of this dance has its roots in the forced migration in the 1960s of thousands of young Amazigh (Berber) people to the mines of northern France. Today, the growing denigration of traditional heritage practices by the younger generations and the decline of the crafts needed to make the instruments are threatening the future of this ancestral ritual.
As part of the Kafila residency program organised by the French Institute of Morocco and in collaboration with Association Tajelt pour l’Art et le Patrimoine de la Taskiwin, Sébastien was planned to go to Morocco to record, photograph and exchange with performers from the Taskiwin to create an in-situ project. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, this project has been postponed until further notice.
